Chispas Over Kiss In Borderlandia
Andrea Muñoz Martinez
Gouache On Board
10”h x 8”w - Framed
2025
Today, the U.S.-Mexico border is constantly being presented as a place of danger and violence. But to me the borderlands are home. It’s a place of humanity, solidarity, and compassion. Paintings of Borderlandia are my valentine to the borderlands. They are my own addition, threads of color, to the fabrics woven by my mother, father, and those that came before them. Weaving history, emotion, and lived experiences; it is a way of preserving the chispas of joys birthed from these lands.
Get to Know the Austin Artist:
I am a Latina/ Chicana artist born in Uvalde, TX. My landscapes, portraits, photographs and performance art render a re-imagined Nepantla, called Borderlandia. I moved to Austin in 2005 and received my BFA from U.T. After I earned my MFA at UCDavis, I moved back to Austin to make and teach art. I teach painting at the Dougherty Arts Center. And I’m a gallery assistant at Art For The People Gallery. Visit me at the gallery every Sunday, Tuesday and Second Saturday!
