In a room dressed up to mimic trees,
Where flowers bloomed in printed freeze,
A waxwing hung in still descent,
Not lost, but deep in self-invent.

No sky to chase, no flock to find,
Just patterned walls and a restless mind.
“Am I,” he thought, “the flight I make,
Or how I bend, or what I break?”

He watched himself in shadow’s cast,
A feathered shape, both first and last.
And in that hush, he made no sound—
For sometimes self is simply found.

So there he stays—not caged, not free—
But held inside the act of be.

Get to Know The Austin Artist:
Phill’s enthusiasm as an artist is fueled by his love for the complex aspects of urban environments.
Placing the importance of expression at the forefront of each piece, he is guided by the desire to create authentic experiences of place. He challenges the connotations of place and argues that is more than a synonym for location, offering instead that it is a unique ensemble of nature and culture.
