King of Nothing
Phillip Seymour
Acrylic on canvas
48”h x 36"w x 2"d - framed
High in the branches of a withered oak, perched a grackle named Grim, who fancied himself the ruler of the land. His glossy black feathers shone in the sunlight, and his eyes gleamed with a self-satisfied glint as he looked over his amassed treasures. For years, Grim had collected trinkets from across the park: bottle caps, scraps of foil, tattered ribbons, a tarnished key with no lock. These bits and bobs, hidden among the tangled branches, glittered in the sparse light. He strutted proudly around his cache, lifting his beak high, sure that he, Grim, was the wealthiest, most powerful creature of all. "All mine," he cawed to the empty air. "Who else but a king could own such treasures?"
Yet, for all his pride, the world below remained unmoved by Grim’s self-appointed royalty. The squirrels, who snickered as they scampered by, called his collection "junk." The sparrows, who nested nearby, paid him no mind, nor did the humans who passed under the tree without a glance at his trove. The truth, invisible to Grim’s haughty eyes, was that his kingdom was built on scraps, a throne of refuse and broken things that meant nothing to anyone but him. But Grim, oblivious, sat atop his pile with a stubborn majesty, clinging to his illusion of grandeur, forever the king of nothing.
Get to Know The Austin Artist:
Phill’s enthusiasm as an artist is fueled by his love for the complex aspects of urban environments.
Placing the importance of expression at the forefront of each piece, he is guided by the desire to create authentic experiences of place. He challenges the connotations of place and argues that is more than a synonym for location, offering instead that it is a unique ensemble of nature and culture.
