Scarred Ash Fruit Canoe
Russell J. Moore
Wood
2.75”h x 17.5”l x 6.5”d
2023
My neighbor was cutting down an ash tree that had begun to decay in their front yard. This piece got my attention because it had partially broken and pulled away from the main tree, leaving a deep scar in the wood. I incorporated that scar into the lip of the shallow bowl on one end and discovered an interesting knot on the other end. The end result was a nice fruit canoe to elegantly display your prize apples and pears!
Get to Know the Lockhart Artist:
I always have an eye out for an interesting chunk of wood that I can transform into a graceful utilitarian piece of art. I typically use a handheld angle grinder with different blades to get the job started, then I polish the wood with a power sander or by hand. I like to leave some of the unique imperfections that initially drew me to the piece and feel those are what gives each bowl its beauty.
