Jovita Idar (1885-1946) was a Mexican-American journalist, activist, teacher, and suffragist. She devoted her life to fighting against separatist ideologies and sought to create a better future for Mexican-Americans. Idar helped organize the first Mexican American civil rights conference in 1911 to address racism, lynching, and dismal educational opportunities for Mexican American children. Hers is the 9th coin In the American Women Quarters Program. She taught me to be fearless and that our voices and perspectives are important. She wrote, “We want our work to be significant, contributing to the formation of character and the cultivation of the minds of future generations.”
Get to Know the Austin Artist:
I am a Latina/ Chicana artist born in Uvalde, TX. My landscapes, portraits, photographs and performance art render a re-imagined Nepantla, called Borderlandia. I moved to Austin in 2005 and received my BFA from U.T. After I earned my MFA at UCDavis, I moved back to Austin to make and teach art. I teach painting at the Dougherty Arts Center. And I’m a gallery assistant at Art For The People Gallery. Visit me at the gallery every Sunday, Tuesday and Second Saturday!
