Across the hall from my studio, is my daughter's bedroom. I love to listen to the soft echoes of my daughter’s piano practice as it drifts into my space. On the day I began Hope Rising, my heart felt heavy with the weight of the world pressing on me. I didn't feel like painting that day but as I listened to her music , each note lifted me with a quiet assurance that everything would be okay, and the painting started to emerge.
The entirety of the field in Hope Rising is sheet music - each note woven into the landscape like a silent song waiting to be heard. The field of warm glow extends toward the horizon and wraps the scene in warmth. Sunflowers, with their golden faces turned toward the "light" of the big sunflower showing us the way to "rise" with the hopes of great things to come.
Hope Rising was born in a quiet moment in my studio listening to my daughter's music across the hall. Her music soothed my soul and allowed me to create this beautiful painting with an equally beautiful message.
It's a tribute to my daughter's gifts—her music, her light, her hope. Hope Rising reminds us of the uplifting power of music, the beauty in the world, and the hope we all have for the dawning of a new day.
The painting is mounted onto an archival white mat board to show off its deckled edge, under glass, and framed with a blond wood frame.
Get to Know the Austin Artist:
I am an American-born, Austin-based, representational painter whose roots are in the visionary realism art movement. To create my work, I use the mischtechnik, an Old Master’s technique originally reinterpreted and taught by Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs. This method of building a painting uses a prescribed sequence of layers, alternating between oil glazes and white tempera. The process produces pearlescent optical grays and a vibrant luminosity.
My visual narratives reveal insights into continuously evolving introspective imaginings. These visual narratives capture moments of self-reflection, dreams, personal experiences, and contemporary events, that are woven together to tell a compelling story.
Fascinated by the scientific aspects of the mischtechnik and my spiritual experiences of painting, I seek to capture not only the physical appearance of my subject but also its emotive qualities. The magical interplay of light and color invites the viewer into the canvas, offering them a space to reflect upon and interpret my imaginative dreamscapes.
