This painting is inspired by the game, “Loteria.” I grew up playing Loteria with my maternal grandmother, we called her Mama Grande. At holidays, birthday parties, BBQs, she would gather her children and grandchildren around her kitchen table with a handful of beans to play Loteria. When she read the cards she recited rhymes that went with each card and incorporated even more joy and laughter into the game. My cousins and I would invent our own rhymes and meanings for cards. For example, “el mano” we jokingly would turn into “apaciguate,” a Spanish word for, “settle!” My grandmother taught us traditions to instill cultural pride. Reflecting now, I realize she also used the game to teach us Spanish, poetry, and how to play with language.
