The inspiration for these robots is a time much different from today when robots were depicted in film and television as large clumsy boxes of metal. I love their almost innocent, cartoonish appearances compared to the sleek AI robots we know today. Ten years ago I decided to sculpt a robot of my own, and found I was drawn to the retro bot instead of the futuristic one.
Get to Know the Austin Artist:
Andrew McMillian has been creating art his entire life. In addition to building robots, he paints and draws animal portraits and large abstract pieces among other things. His love of electronics tinkering and woodworking skills made natural allies for his robots. Andrew has called Austin home since 1998 minus a three-year stint in Santa Fe, New Mexico along the way. Austin wanted him back.
