Black-Chinned Hummingbird: Poder Obrer@

Vinyl Die Cut Sticker
3” diameter

A black-chinned Hummingbird flies through Borderlandia. Their migration is beautiful. They migrate from here across the western U.S. and southern Canada wintering mainly in western Mexico. Hummingbirds symbolize the Aztec God of War, as they are fierce and agile fighters. They use their beaks as weapons. I painted this portrait to represent the maquiladora workers who fight for their right to unionize in Piederas Negras, Coauhuila, Mexico. Poder Obrer@ translates to “Worker Power.” Paintings of hummingbirds insert humor, comfort, and joy into difficult but urgent realities about the borderlands. This mini-print is made of thick, durable vinyl that protects your stickers from scratches, water, and sunlight. They’re even dishwasher safe.

Get to Know the Austin Artist:
Andrea Muñoz Martínez is a Latinx artist who paints abstract landscapes of a re-imagined place called Borderlandia.  She was born and raised in Uvalde, TX. Martinez earned a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from the University of California, Davis. She is a border artist not only because she grew up in the borderlands of South Texas but also because her paintings and performance art take the border and boundaries as their subject.

I grew up in south Texas where hill country meets brush country.  It is the vitality and depth of this vast landscape that my art evokes.  Inspired by the writings of the theorist Gloria Anzaldua, who described the border as a “1,950 mile-long open wound,” I render a place I call Borderlandia.
