This self portrait conveys my spiritual battles. During this time I was going to church and I would evaluate my myself and pick my flaws . In everyday life, actions and behaviors are classified as either good or evil. These concepts are influenced by personal perspectives. The skull whispering in my ear is interpreted from art history painting representing evil spirt and bad influence. The angel is also pulled from an art history painting, representing the angel protecting me from evil.
Get to Know the Artist:
Bieke Campos is a Mexican American artist from the East Side of Austin, TX. His paintings are influenced by his environment, specifically his experiences with poverty in East Austin. He primarily uses oil paint to portray and bring light to poverty. He currently studies painting at Texas State University and is anticipated to graduate with a BFA in Studio Art in Fall 2025. Bieke's work has received notable awards including the Scholastic Gold Medal (2022) and American Visions award (2022).
