Texas Paper Wasp Nest with 22kt Gold Drip
Abby Lou Pottery
Clay, glaze, gold luster & wood
5”h x 3.5”w x 1”d
This starts as a real wasp nest that is harvested in winter when the nest is vacant. I then dip it in a special slip several times to coat the nest. When fired the paper nest burns away and the porcelain coating is left. I then fire them again with a high gloss clear glaze for extra strength. The gold is hand painted on and fired for a third time.
Has hook for easy wall hanging
Get to Know the Austin Artist:
My interest in functional pottery comes from my belief that they are necessary, yet overlooked common objects that play a very important role in our everyday lives. I’m really interested in how we consume and the way we are connected to our food and drink. So much work goes into each important step of creating things to eat and drink; growing, processing, cooking, fermentation etc. Very similar to all the steps of working with clay. I try to create forms that will showcase the work put into creating the product and celebrate the act of eating, drinking, and sharing a meal with friends.
